Taking up the Cross-Luke 9

Time and time again I have heard people talk about taking up our cross and bearing our burdens.  But, is that really what Jesus meant when he talked to his disciples? Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Jesus was actually saying to the disciples that they would need to give up their lives, their wants and desires and strictly do His Will.  Later in the chapter when people “want” to follow they have things to do first such as saying good-bye.  Jesus was not interested in that, he needed people who were faithfully willing to deny themselves of everything else for Him.

God’s will and God’s plans for our lives are far from anything we can imagine. Denying oneself is never easy but the rewards on this earth are nothing compared to our rewards in heaven with our Creator.

I encourage you to remind yourself that choosing to follow Christ leads to everlasting life and that is far more valuable then anything we have here on Earth.
