The Drowning- Luke 8

I almost drowned. Well, in my mind at least! We have arrived at Luke Chapter 8 and to be honest I was waiting for this moment.  Originally, the little human that I am wanted to tell you how many times I read the section A Lamp on as Stand.  I was going through my failing first marriage and couldn’t figure out what was really going on until God brought everything to light.  To be honest though, that story can be found over and over just watching tv so I decided on a different story.

As I said, I almost drowned.

Luke 8:24 Jesus Calms the Storm

“The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

I have the greatest dad on the planet and one year he asked my brother and I to try white water rafting with him for the first time. We were all excited about this adventure, well low and behold it turns out that the river had reached one of its highest levels on record.  Well our raft had so many people that I had to sit at the front of the raft like a hood ornament.  Even though I know how to swim really well and I knew my dad or brother would jump in after me (against the guides instructions of course) I was nervous.  At the end of the trip the guide yells out “we are coming to the largest most unforgiving whirlpool along the Rio Grande. Not a single rafter has made it through this season without the raft overturning.”

Wow, I thought, here we go I am going to drown, right here in the muddy Rio Grande river! As we approached, the only thing I could think was hold on tight, and Jesus didn’t let those guys in the boat drown during a storm and so he won’t let me drown either!!! That was a moment of absolute faith because I believed it with all my heart.  Our raft was the first raft to make it through the whirlpool that season.

We often feel like we are going to drown whether that be drown in our work, our thoughts, emotions and other ways. When you feel like you are drowning I encourage you to as ask yourselves the same question Jesus asked his disciples “Where is your faith?” Then believe with all your heart that Jesus won’t let your raft overturn either.

-In Him,

Lisa
