Growing up, one thing was GUARANTEED, if you entered into the presence of my family, you were going to receive LOVE! The hugs are endless, so if you were a bit standoffish, you would be cured within a matter of minutes.
My grandparents were/are poster children for love and kindness. We were raised to be welcoming, compassionate and loving to the people entering our homes or walking by on the street.
I thought about this raising when I was leaving church today. I wondered whether the warm, welcoming and loving people were all raised in the same Christian mold that I was. I thought about what lead each of them to the loving kindness of Christ. Take a look at the verse below:
Colossians 3:12-14New International Version (NIV)
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
I stop and ask myself whether or not I have been living my life according to this verse. Am I wearing the clothes of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness and love? Not only to strangers but to the people in my own home? To my co-workers?
Oh how I would love to wear these glistening “clothes” but truth be told, I could use some work. We probably all could. Whether we are just starting or fine tuning, here is our moment. The moment that we can turn to those around us and give the biggest hug of all, sharing the very love that Christ has shown us.
